Minnesota --Feb 6-13, 2013

We went up to Minnesota for our annual chili contest and to play & frolic in the snow. Every year, I am so excited to get Will all bundled up and throw him out there into the environment that I grew up in.
The snow terrorist

And each year, he amazes me on how much he loves it! It took him a few hours to get his footing when trying to climb the sledding hill but once he got acquired, he was ALL IN. I would stop and ask him periodically if he was cold. He would say "Nope." Then after a couple hours, if he wanted to go inside. He would answer, "I want to stay outside." :)

Some of Will's favorite things:

1) Sledding down the hill
2) Sledding behind the snowmobile (sled attached by rope)
3) Snowmobiling
4) Making snow angels
My little Snow angel :)

5) Sledding down long steep driveway because the 12.1 inches of fresh powder that fell in a six hour period was way too fluffy and it would all be in your face if we went down the big hill! When he sled down the driveway, he crashed into a snowbank at the bottom. It was quite comical. I captured it all on video. Every time he watches the video of himself, he laughs so hard and asks me to play it again. At the same time, after the crash, he gets up and tries to walk back into the sled. His foot hits the sled and its slippery so he slips and face plants in the snow. Again, he is belly laughing at himself! I have to upload that for you to see.
6) Playing with his cousins, Braedyn, Braxdyn and Breckyn. So many boys, so little time!

And some of my favorite things:

1) Challenging all the fam to the chili contest. There were 22 entries this year (most ever!). Believe it or not, but I did NOT place at all. There was 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a couple honorable mentions. I think the judging totally got that one wrong! haha. So as it turns out, Jerry (Julie's fiance) entered again this year. He made an excellent chili and came in 2nd place! He beat us all. Way to go Jerry!!! Now we can't really raz him too much for the "meatball" chili, which didn't place that he made last year. :) Initially, Julie placed 3rd. We were SO HAPPY that the two lovebirds got 2nd and 3rd place together. It's your year Julie! But LO & BEHOLD a BIG shakedown happened at the contest. Here's how it played out:

Some random person came up to me and asked me where my Mom's chili was. I was like, I don't know. He said, You don't know her crock pot?" I point to her crock and say, "I think it's this one." But to make sure, I looked at this paper on the table which shows who is what letter that coordinates with the crock pot. The paper I'm talking about looks like this:

So as you can see from the papers above, my Mom's name is not listed anywhere. I double and triple checked. Then, I flipped the papers over to see if anything was on the back. So then I ask Joel who is the head honcho, "Where is my Mom's letter?" He says it's letter J. I say, "This paper says Julie is letter J." He looks at me with this strange look like Oh-Oh. He says, "Let me double check my paperwork." Then he gets out his clipboards and starts flipping through all his papers. By this time, my Mom caught on to what was going on (my loud voice, right?) and walked over next to me. Joel looks up and he says in a low voice, "J is the correct winner and it's Connie." Then all the screaming started!! WHAT? OH MY GOSH?! ARE YOU SERIOUS? My Mom runs over to Julie and says, hand over the medal and money! Poor Julie Jo. Mom literally just ate her young. HAHA. So there you go. That's how the big shakedown happened.

The real 2nd place winner and the not real 3rd place! LOL

Way to go Jerry! You beat all of us. WHAT?

The REAL 3rd place winner after she stripped Julie of her medal. Grandma Con Bon!! :)

2) Hanging with all the family, cousins and Aunties!

Jody, Auntie Marlene, Auntie Bev, Cousin Becky, Sis Julie and Cousin Sadie

3) Good quality bonding time with Mom & Dan. Thank you so much again for hosting us!

4) Getting snowed in... 12.1 inches in 6 hours! I was in my glory. We broke into the old game closet from growing up. We sucked Will into playing board games for hours. He was totally into it! Old games like Hi-Ho Cherry O!, Cracker Jack, Chutes and Ladders, Let's go Fishing, Uno, LCR, War. You name it, we played it. BLAST.
Look! WAR!!!!!

5) Staying over in the Hickley Casino hotel on the way home for one night where we were able to swim and hang out. Julie stayed in the hotel with Will and me. Again, we popped popcorn and played lots more of those games! Which, now I have gone out and bought at the store so we have some fun kid games around. :)

6) And who can forget driving in a blizzard snowstorm trying to make it home from Duluth? We knew the storm was coming. We knew we had time to run an errand in Duluth for Julie's Bridal Shower, which we did. My original appointment was Monday morning but this big storm was coming so we did the appointment a day early. After we were done, we said, let's go out for lunch! It was not snowing yet. We were right next to Grandma's Saloon & Deli who has my favorite Chicken & Wild Rice soup. Yum. So off we went and we were seated and served. While eating, we see out the window that it has started to snow. Five minutes later, it was snowing REAL hard. Julie calls us on the cell phone. She says she and Jerry just got home and we'd better hurry up because the roads were getting really bad. We paid and hoofed it out of there. As we are driving,  you can't see I-35 (the interstate). The wind was gusting so hard. I was scared out of my mind. I had to keep looking at my cell phone so I wouldn't pay attention to the road. Dan is a good driver. We made it all the way home just to get stuck in the driveway... it was a great challenge! Then there's Will in the backseat who fell asleep the entire way! He had no idea what was going on or that Mommy forgot his coat at home. When you get into the car into a heated garage, you are from North Carolina where we don't wear too many coats, you forget. No, really. I had his coat and hat in my hand and forgot my cell phone in the house. I put it down to go grab my phone. I came out and walked right by the coat/hat and jumped in the car. Nice. The entire drive, I was thinking we are going in the ditch and I don't even have winter gear for my own kid! Mom/Dan or me would have given him the coat off our back if that's what would have happened. All in all, we got home safe --thank you Papa Dan! And then it was all on for board games, hot chocolate and fun times with the fam! :)
